# How to format your SD card in FAT32

This article explains how to format an SD card to FAT32, including instructions for both Windows and macOS.

||| Before you start: make sure you make a copy of all files on local disk, formatting the SD will cause all the files on it to be erased.

### Quick summary:
* Right click the SD card in File Manager > Format, select FAT32, then click Start > OK. 
* iMapper Racer 2: use only SD cards that have max capacity of 16GB 
* iMapper Racer 3: you can use SD cards up to 32GB
* On a Mac, open Disk Utility, then click your SD card > Erase > Format > MS-DOS (FAT) > Erase.

### For Windows 
Here’s how to format an SD card to FAT32 using Windows File Manager:

1. Select This PC in File Manager, and right click your **SD card** in the Devices section.

2. Click **Format**.

3. Click the File system drop down, and select **FAT32**.

4. Click **Start**.

5. Click **OK.**

###### For MacOs
How to Format an SD Card to FAT32 on a Mac:

1. Open **Disk Utility**.

2. Click your **SD card** in the External section.

3. Click **Erase**.

4. Rename the card if you want, and click on the **Format **drop down.

5. Click **MS-DOS (FAT)**.

6. Click **Erase**.
